Craftmanship

Tsubame and Sanjo –
two manufacturing towns where the history and traditions of industory live on.
By continually facing new challenges,
our craftsmen have acquired more advanced techniques,
to ensure that these manufacturing towns never stop evolving.

Tsubame and Sanjo, often referred to as “mid-prefecture,” are located almost in the center of Niigata Prefecture. If we study the history and traditions of manufacturing in these two towns, we find that the manufacture of nails during the Edo Period marked a turning point. The history and traditions of such manufacturing have been predecessors. Amid changing times, these craftsmen have continued to meet new challenges, by focussing their advanced skills and intelligence on opening up new territories, such as Tsuki copper vessels and sharp-edged craftsmen’s tools.
While traditional industries such as Tsuki copper vessels and forging are passed on in an unbroken line from generation to generation, Tsubame has also branched out into metal Western tableware and metal housewares while Sanjo has progressed to making work tools and items for hairdressers and beauticians. The two towns create attractive products ideal for modern living and articles without which no modern home would be complete. To create these products, craftmen have to develop increasingly sophisticated processing technologies and in this way the Tsubame-Sanjo area has conquered a position as one of the world’s leading technological zones. The “manufacturing” tradition continues to evolve.
